Pedicularis groenlandica, or as it is commonly known as because of the shape of its flowers (see insert), Elephant's Head or Elephanthead Lousewort (a big handle for a little flower!) is a parasitic plant in the broomrape family (see also
Boschniakia hookeri and
Orobranche californica). These plants can be found in - you guessed it - Greenland, but also across Canada and into western North America.
P. groenlandica uses haustoria to penetrate the roots of other plants and then suck their water and nutrients out.
The "indian warrior" pedicularis species also makes for a nice tobacco substitute.
